Shot Ideas

I have researched many different music videos and films to see what shots are used to display certain things such as the guitarists, drummers and any other shots which I believe are creative and could work. This research has been beneficial in coming up with a detailed shot list and I believe with aid us to create an interesting and shot variational video.
This extreme close up of the microphone and the mouth would be a good shot to replicate as it would indicate to our audience the era of music which we are appealing to, despite the Foo Fighters using an old style microphone, they are a well established band appealing to a specific genre (rock) whereas our band is brand new so the microphone in our video would indicate something completely different in conjuncture to all other elements in our video; expressing a Motown outlook.

This three shot is a good way to display all three singers in our band, it shows the old style microphones as well as bringing the band together. Despite our band having one lead singer in the particular song they have recorded for the music video, the three shot allows the three singers to appear as equals which is something they have required. The lighting in this shot is also something I think we should replicate as the focus is on the singers at the front and you can only just see the instrument players at the back, this is another requirement as our band representative indicated the focus is to be on the three lead singers. The lighting is significantly simple, which will be ideal to replicate as we do not have a lot of time on the day to keep changing the lights due to having to share the filming day, it is also relevant to the Motown in the simplicity.

This shot demonstrates Max and I's previous idea of having the lead singer lit brighter than the other singers to introduce the idea of one dominant singer, although Girls Aloud are in a different formation, the lighting is a good example of what we wanted to replicate. The lights in the background also create a slight silhouette feature which would be something creative and interesting to try. Presenting the idea of one dominant singer is perhaps slightly different to what the representative requires however due to the song choice it would be difficult not to focus on the singer that is singing during important verses.

This shot is taken from a YouTuber called 'Deedlebag' who is known for his drum covers, I found this a few years ago when randomly browsing and remembered it when researching shots used to show off the drummer. It is important to research shots for the drummer in particular as there are certain points in our bands song which require particular focus on the drummer. I think this medium close up is good as it shows off some of the drum kit as well as the drummer, the depth of focus has been altered to blur the foreground symbol and have sharp focus on the drummer which I think is creative and simple in the construction but it can look professional.
Another medium close up taken from a 'Deedlebag' video. I think this is an interesting shot which we could perhaps replicate as it again shows the kit and the drummer, it has the idea of looking through the kit towards the drummer which could make the audience feel closer to the band and so I think it is a key shot to implement.
Another interesting shot, similar to the above. If we were to have this shot further away from the drummer we could include some of the other instrument players in our band in the corner, just to present the band all playing together but remain focus on the drummer.

This shot is taken from a Biffy Clyro music video, I think it is a good shot to show off the guitar as you actually see what the hands are playing which is relevant to our band as there is a particular point in the song where there is a guitar solo, this shot would be good to replicate at this point. I think the lighting in this shot is too dark for our video and doesn't demonstrate the correct genre but in terms of set up and framing it is ideal.
This shot is taken again from Biffy Clyro's video and I think the framing is good to show the instrument player while showing another instrument player in the background which is key to demonstrate everyone playing and singing together but still having particular focus on only one instrument player.
This screen shot is taken from the film 'Dream Girls' as I feel the three shot is good to present all the singers, we can see they are all wearing the same dress and have similar hairstyles which is a good representation of Motown and so replicating this shot will present genre conventions which the audience expect to see.
Again taken from 'Dream Girls' I feel having this different angle of the lead singers would add the 'behind the scenes' effects which the audience would feel a part of and generate a connection with the band and its audience which is the key to success in a band. We could also do something interesting with the light here and add a silhouette feature to the girls to add interest and creativity and move away from conventions, doing this would keep the audience watching the video entertained. This shot also demonstrates the triangle formation which was previously mentioned as a layout idea.
This shot demonstrates the triangle formation again but allows the lead singer to stand out from the backing singers due to the shot angle. This would be important to replicate to make visual sense for the audience to see the lead singer singing the lyrics.
I decided to include this shot as it has interesting lights at the back of the singers which Max and I discussed at the very start of the project as something we would like to include, whether we can implement this is another story, but I think it projects the Motown idea really well and is entertaining lighting for the audience to keep interested.

As mentioned before, a backwards angle would create the 'behind the scenes' feel for the audience to be drawn into and a part of, I then mentioned I wanted to create a silhouette and so I found this screen shot from Dream Girls to demonstrate this well.
I got the silhouette idea from the music video 'Aeroplanes' by B.O.B. and the Paramore lead singer Haley Williams, I have always liked the lighting in it and I think by replicating the light, not the person's pose would be creative and interesting.
Through frequent use and upload to the website Deviantart I have discovered some interesting photography and I think this picture demonstrates and displays a piano well, I think the blurriness of the keys in the foreground moving to sharpness, I think it would be a good angle to use to see the keyboard players fingers when the specific parts in the song require the keyboard to be seen.
This is another picture which demonstrates the hands playing the keys well, although slightly less creative than the above picture, I think both angles would be good to replicate.

The following pictures are examples of shots that I have previously taken of a piano, here you can see I have used limited depth of field and different focuses in the experiment. The first and last picture has a sharp piano but a blurry person and so it indicates creative focus on the piano. These images have not been edited and so are not as good quality as I would like to demonstrate but it is an indicator of what I would like to achieve with the shots of the keyboard player in the music video.
