5.1.11 - 1st Recording of Song

5.1.11 - Molly forwarded a message from Ian which contained the recording of The Shoop Shoop Song, this is helpful as we will be able to match the lyrics to the timings which will essentially allow us to create an accurate shot list and get an idea of how many shots we need to get in the little time we have on the filming day.

Here is the first recording we have been given of the band. I am not sure if we will get a second recording or a higher quality one although it now gives us a chance to hear what they sound like but we have also learned a few key things.

For starters we were told that the three female singers all share the vocals and have an equal standing in superiority however, from this, there is only one main vocalist. This means we will now more than likely result in the lead vocalist having more shots during the music video rather than having an equal amount between the three.

As I am in charge of the overall look of the band I think the singers should take the triangle formation where the two backups are on either side of the lead and slightly further back, this would make sense for the music video aesthetics but also it would allow the two back ups to appear in more of the shots rather than perhaps standing to the side. They should appear in more shots as the band representative said the singers have equal standing and thus as the music video is potentially an advertising ploy, they should at least have more shots than generic back up singers might have.

As I have looked at Dream Girls as part of my research for clothing ideas, I will now have another look at it and look at how the stage is set up, where people stand etc. I will find different ways the girls can be displayed and to see if there is other feasible ideas that would work.

Cher - Shoop Shoop Song Analysis

Following the confirmation of the song, I have decided to analyse the orinigal video to see if there are any elements which we can implement into our own video.

This song was first released in 1964, originally performed by Betty Everett and gained much chart success. Many covers of the song have been made, it was not until 1991 when Cher released her own version of the song that a music video was created. The music video features clips from the 1990 film 'Mermaids', a performance from Cher and guests appearances from Christina Ricci and Winona Ryder.

Looking at the style of dresses worn in the video, they are not dissimilar to the ones that I have researched. I feel that the polka-dots are out of fashion and inappropriate but the A-line style dress is perfect for our bands image. The video has Motown themes, for example the three females are all wearing the same dress although one is being promoted as more dominant (obviously as Cher is a solo artist).

It is interesting to note the interactions between Cher and the other two girls in the video, it is full of energy and fun looking which is something that we could perhaps use in our video although I would prefer to avoid the 90's cheese if possible.

There is also a slight behind the scenes look to the film, where microphones and recording kit is seen in the shots (as seen in the pictures below). I think this would be interesting to experiment with although it would require further discussion with the group.
The video also uses colour and black and white and we have been discussion possibilities of using black and white in our video in order to try and create a more vintage Motown look.

The original video can be described as an illustration music video as the images seen in the video reflect the lyrics. For example, the hand actions of the two supporting females; when 'eyes' is sung then the two females move their hands to their eyes and the same for when 'face' is sung, they move their hands to their face. The music video also features clips from the 1990 film 'Mermaids', and illustrates certain elements to the lyrics of the song, for example when 'it's in his kiss' is sung, a shot of the film where two people are kissing is shown. This links the lyrics to the visuals seen in the music video throughout, although there are certain clips from the film that are slightly irrelevant such as Winona Ryder's character smashing a plate.

Pictures of the Lead Singers

The pictures of the three ladies have finally been emailed to Molly's account, who has sent them to me through Facebook:

I can now adapt the previous image research to suit their body shapes and sizes and find realistically priced dresses which they can buy for not only the music video and the promo packs but their future performances should they choose to use what this group produces at the end of the project.

17.12.10 - I sent Max a direct message on Twitter to tell him that we have the pictures of the three lead singers.
